Spotify is a music subscription whose margin is squeezed between rights-holder payments and the price a listener pays.
The economics are simple and unforgiving: most revenue goes to labels and publishers as royalties, at rates set by negotiation and largely outside the company's control. Profit growth therefore comes not from scale itself but from raising subscription prices and shifting toward content with different economics.
That is why the company invested in podcasts and audiobooks: their rights are cheaper or owned outright, while the listener pays the same subscription. The second lever is advertising on the free tier, which doubles as a funnel into the paid one.
Competitors are Apple, Amazon and Google, for whom music is not a profit source but part of an ecosystem; they can hold prices down deliberately. Spotify's advantage is its recommendation system and device independence. The company pays no dividend.
