Share count is a period average, so market cap is approximate.
Seagate makes hard drives — cheaper per unit of capacity than flash, and therefore not displaced by it in the data centre.
The primary buyers are cloud operators that need to store cold data cheaply. The consumer segment moved to solid-state drives long ago — that transition has already happened, and today's drive market is almost entirely enterprise, which means it depends on the investment cycles of a few large customers.
The market is split between two manufacturers, which makes it unusually disciplined for a commodity industry: capacity is not raced upward and prices hold. Shingled and heat-assisted recording raise per-platter capacity without a proportional cost increase — hence improving margins at the same sales volume.
The weak points are cyclicality and concentration: a pause in purchasing by a couple of customers shows in the accounts immediately. The long-term risk is flash falling to a price where storage cost converges. Seagate pays a dividend and carries meaningful debt.
