AMETEK makes instruments and electric motors for narrow industrial applications.
The portfolio is deliberately fragmented: dozens of niche products for aerospace, medicine, energy and science. Each occupies a small market where the company is often first or second, and competition is limited by certification complexity and by volumes too small to attract large players.
Growth comes from acquiring similar niche manufacturers and then raising their efficiency. The model resembles an industrial analogue of Roper: value comes from target selection rather than integration. Risks: the industrial cycle and acquisition prices. Its products sit inside customers' instruments and installations for years, and replacing them requires requalification, so repeat orders are a high share. AMETEK pays a dividend.
The series is stated in the current share scale after splits; dividends are not included in the price
